Picking the Right Dumpster Size
Dumpster sizes are measured in cubic yards. Most people can't visualize what a cubic yard looks like and knowing how much junk they have to haul, can be daunting.

Before trying to figure out the difference between a 10, 15, 20, 30, or 40 yard dumpster, let’s understand what a cubic yard actually is. Below is a breakdown to be understand what a cubic yard looks like.

1 yd = 3 ft | One yard is three feet
1 sq. yd = 3 ft x 3 ft sq | One square yard is three-foot by three-foot square

Now turn that square into a cube. A cube is a three-dimensional solid object bounded by six square faces or sides.

3 ft long x 3 ft wide x 3 ft high

Knowing what a cubic yard looks like, will help you envision the size of the dumpster rental you will need. Knowing how much cubic space you need will depend on how much and what type of waste you have to haul.

You want to rent a dumpster that big enough to fit all the junk you want disposed, but not too big, where there's a lot of unused space. Keep in mind you won't be able to overfill the dumpsters.

As mentioned in our FAQ's a 10-yard dumpster is too small for the average renovation, move, or cleanout. For residential applications, though, 20 or 30 cubic yard dumpsters are almost always too big.

From research and experience, you’ll find that a 15 cubic yard dumpster is the perfect size for most residentail applications. It offers a little more space than the 10-yard dumpster, but not so much that it becomes excessive.

Choose a 15 Yard Dumpster
If you are renting a dumpster for the first time and aren't sure what size dumpster to choose or if you have rented a dumpster before, but chose the 10 yd and it was too small, choose the 15 yard dumpster. This size dumpster will offer all the capacity you need for your project.

What if the 15 cubic yards is too much or what if it's not?
There's going to be some uncertainty when it comes to renting a dumpster. Estimating how much junk has to go can be challenging. Just remember it's always better to go over in estimation than under.
