Residential Dumpster FAQ

Renting a dumpster is a cost-efficient way to clear away junk, debris and unwanted items.
Below are some common question and answers to know before renting a dumpster.

What's the difference between a bin, dumpster and roll off container?

There is no difference. These terms are used interchangeably.

Does a dumpster or hauling service fits my needs?

If you foresee your disposal project lasting more than several days and you as the renter plan on filling the container(s) yourself, than a dumpster rental is what you need.

Where will the dumpster be placed?

Although there are some limitations, the customer can specify the best area to place the dumpster.

What are the common roll off dumpster sizes?

– 12yd = Dimensions: 12′ long x 8′ wide x 4′ tall (Equivalent to: Roughly 3.5 pickup truck loads)
– 15yd = Dimensions: 16′ long x 8′ wide x 4′ tall (Equivalent to: Roughly 4.5 pickup truck loads)
– 20yd = Dimensions: 16′ long x 8′ wide x 5′ tall (Equivalent to: Roughly 6 pickup truck loads)
– 30yd = Dimensions: 22′ long x 8′ wide x 5′ tall (Equivalent to: Roughly 9 pickup truck loads)
– 40yd = Dimensions: 22′ long x 8′ wide x 6.5′ tall (Equivalent to: Roughly 12 pickup truck loads)

What fits in a 12 yard dumpster?

– 250 sq ft deck removal
– 1,500 sq ft of roof shingles (single layer)
– Small kitchen or bath remodeling job

What fits in a 15 yard dumpster?

What fits in a 20 yard dumpster?

What may fit in a 30 yard dumpster?

What would fit in a 40 yard dumpster?

– New construction or major addition (larger home)
– Large amounts of demolition debris, trash, paper, or cardboard

Why selecting the right size matters:

Choosing the appropriate roll off dumpster size is important. Overloading your dumpster can cause you to exceed the weight limit and incur additional fees. If there is material hanging over the sides, and the dumpster cannot be picked up, you can be charged a trip fee and have to off-load some of the debris. NOTE: If you’re on the fence about which dumpster best suits your project, consider going up a size.

Can I dispose of hazardous materials in the dumpster I rent?

No. Some of us have old paint, chemicals and containers of motor oil laying around that we just want to get rid of. While it is tempting to just throw these items into the dumpster, you can get hit with a hefty fine if you do.

What constitutes a hazardous material?

Hazardous materials include wet paint, oil (other liquids), asbestos, sealed tanks/drums, electronics (e-waste), tires, and some types of furniture.

Why is there such a wide range in price for renting a dumpster?

Typically, the cost of renting a dumpster ranges between $150 and $800, according to reports from Angie’s List. Most dumpster rentals are based on size as well as an estimated weight of the dumpster, once filled. The rental for completing a large renovation in a home versus getting rid of unwanted items is much higher in cost.

Are there hidden costs?

There are no hidden fees including no environmental fees, no fuel charges, no pickup fees, and no seasonal fees.

If you plan on getting rid of old mattresses or box springs, houseware appliances, or even old tires, it’s likely you will incur some extra disposal fees. Most waste companies have regulations in place regarding what you can and cannot put in your rented dumpster.

What are the signs of a reputable dumpster service?

Location: The first place to search for dumpster rental services is locally.

Proper Disposal: How the dumpster rental company disposes of the waste materials you put in their dumpsters, should be important. The company should work with local businesses that recycle or reuse much of the waste as possible.

Pricing: The cost of the dumpster rental should be simple and easy to understand. Always remember to ask about hidden fees like truck mileage or hours.

Delivery and Pickup: Prompt delivery and pick-up of your dumpster is one of the most important signs of a quality dumpster company.

Should I cover my dumpster rental if it rains or snows?

Covering your dumpster in rain or snow is a good idea. A tarp over your roll off dumpster will reduce the amount of moisture that gets inside and prevent it from adding weight to your debris. If you aren’t worried about bad weather, you can leave the container uncovered when not in use. Call us if you have any questions.

Do I need a permit to rent a dumpster in Rochester, New York?

If you are placing your dumpster rental in the public right-of-way, including on a city street or blocking a sidewalk, you will need a permit from the city. You can apply for a permit at city hall. If you are placing the container entirely on private property, you will not need a permit. If you have any questions about renting a dumpster in Rochester, call us at 585-225-OAKS (6257).

Do I need a permit to rent a dumpster in Buffalo, New York?

If you are placing your dumpster rental in the public right-of-way, including on a city street or blocking a sidewalk, you will need a permit from the city. You can apply for a permit at city hall. If you are placing the container entirely on private property, you will not need a permit. If you have any questions about renting a dumpster in Buffalo, call us at 716-875-OAKS (6257).

What can you throw in a roll off dumpster?

If your cleanup involves common, everyday waste, chances are you can throw most types of household junk in a dumpster. However, each city has different rules on what can go in a dumpster rental. Furniture, appliances, electronics, stumps, and dirt may not be accepted in all locations. This is typically due to trash and recycling regulations: certain items may need to be sent to a separate landfill, transfer station or recycling facility.

Check our Rochester and Buffalo guideline lists on what is accepted in both residential and commercial roll off dumpsters. If you’re still not sure, contact Oaks Dumpster to find out if items in question, can be thrown in a dumpster.
